The fact that colombian coffee is the country’s main export crop since the second half of the 19th century shows the immense quality of its production. Today, more than 150 years later, Medellín’s coffee culture is being renewed thanks to the so-called “origin” or “special” coffees.
The capital of Antioquia (known as “The city of eternal spring”) has a climate and a geography that make this lands the perfect spot to grow coffee. Year after year, generation after generation, coffee farmers plant and harvest their crops by hand. By doing it this way they have the guarantee of producing the best and obtaining the purest and most delicious coffee.
After an estimated time of six months, the plants exhibit a red fruit that indicates their maturity. For this reason, in the past it was more common for women to devote themselves to harvesting the grain because of their ability to recognize colors more quickly.
Coffee in Colombia has become as important for its economy as oil is for other regions, thanks to the fact that this beverage is the second most consumed in the world after water.
The high quality of coffee is obtained as a result of several factors including latitude, altitude, land, temperature and undoubtedly the love transmitted by each of the people involved in the process. The combination of these variables results in an excellent quality coffee, like the one produced by Don Fabio Reyes at his farm “La Simeona“, located in the town of Jardín, Antioquia (close to Medellín). There he welcomes both locals and strangers with affection and kindness, feeling proud of his work, his peasant roots and his hand-picked coffee, whose special flavor and aroma contribute to strengthen the love of many for this drink.
Visiting this coffee farm, allows us to be in harmony with nature and enjoy an atmosphere that sip by sip is stored in our memory. Everyone is amazed by the landscapes, the green of the mountains and the human warmth that invites to share a hot cup in the midst of gatherings, stories and anecdotes that Don Fabio and his family have to tell. Time seems to stop in this familiar space where coffee is the main subject, its origins, tastes, experiences and all the work behind this wonderful drink.
