Less than 20 years ago Medellín was famous all over the world for the criminal legacy of Pablo Escobar and for the violence that plagued different areas of the city, especially the slums.
From a visitor’s perspective, it can come as a surprise the huge transformation that the capital of Antioquia has achieved in such a such a short period of time, to the point of becoming one of the main Colombian tourist destinations and an engine for economic growth and recognition.
And although politics has something to do with this process, there is another fundamental protagonist who has contributed from the beginning to achieve success: culture.
Thanks to multiple public and private initiatives, communities from the poorest neighborhoods of Medellín have found in music the best ally to end violence and offer their youngest members the opportunity to believe in a better future. There is a musical genre in particular that has stolen the hearts of many groups of “paisa” artists and creators: Hip-Hop.
The most ironic thing about it, is that society usually tends to link this type of music with gangs, weapons, big chains and fights. But reality has proven that Hip-Hop and Rap can become tools for personal growth, to create deeper social bonds and heal the wounds of the past.
It’s just a matter of listening around to realize that Medellín’s Hip Hop scene lives a great moment, with artists of diverse origins and styles, everyone of them really equiped with talent for creation and whose work will continue to thrive locally and around the world.
Here we share a small selection of songs, so you can enjoy a little bit of paisa Hip Hop:
