Diving in Colombia is one of the main tourist attractions, due to its immense maritime wealth composed of two different oceans and an area of almost 1 million square kilometers. With so much space available, the options to dive in search of the most beautiful species of the sea are abundant.
However, not all destinations have the development or level of preservation to ensure an unforgettable experience under water. That is why we have selected the best places in our country where deep-sea fans can explore this fascinating and mysterious world.
Rosario Islands
This archipelago located about 100 kilometers from Cartagena is one of the favorite destinations of Colombians when looking for a place of retirement in the middle of the sea. It is also a privileged place to organize an excursion to the open sea and immerse yourself in the warm waters of the Caribbean. It has an immense coral reef that serves as home to countless marine species.
Solano Bay
This town is part of the ZEPA (Exclusive Zone of Artisanal Fishing of the Colombian Pacific) and its inhabitants have been in charge of protecting the marine ecosystems.
The ruins of the ARC Sebastián de Belalcázar is one of the most beautiful spots to visit. This ship, sunk in 2004, is located 400m from the beach. During the whole year you can practice diving, although between December and January you can see more large fauna because the water temperature lowers to 20 * C
Gorgona Island
This island owes its name to the Spanish conquerors who discovered it in 1524, half of which lost their lives due to snake bites. This natural park is a paradise that offers an incredible tropical rainforest full of endemic life and waters so blue and rich that you can easily see from the smallest surgeonfish to the largest whale. It is surrounded by the largest coral reef in the Colombian Pacific Ocean.
Nuquí
Located in the center of the Gulf of Tribugá, one of the biggest attractions of this town of Chocó are its virgin beaches. It has more than 30 outstanding dive sites. The seabed is rocky, dotted with white corals, in a wide range of depths and landscapes. Just 20 minutes away heading south are the most recognized sites, including La Parguera, Piedra Bonita and La Roñosa, a very large stone that can be seen from the boat and where you can see groupers, tarpons and soft corals.
Malpelo
It is called “the living rock”. It belonged to Spain, then to Peru and finally became the most western territorial position of Colombia. It is the product of a volcanic eruption that ocurred more than 20 million years ago. It is an exclusive site for advanced divers due to strong currents, waves and depth. It is possible to dive in the company of hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini), silky sharks (Carcharhinus falciformis) and Galapagos (carcharhinus galapagensis).
